Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a physical address?

No. All Volunteers get together at events, meetings and transports.

Can you help me rehome my pet?

We do not have a shelter to take in animals. For emergencies, such as abuse, Animal Control is called. We ask pet owners to bring their pet to the shelter only as a last resort. Here are a few suggestions.

  • Ask family, friends or co-workers if they can keep your pet. This way you know it is going to a good home.
  • You can ask around to different foster homes, rescue groups or sanctuaries, but be prepared to hear that they are full.  If you have a purebred there are  rescue groups that take  specific breeds. We are always looking for volunteers to help foster adoptable pets. Unfortunately, there are just too many animals and not enough families.
  • Place ads at Vet's Office, Dog Grooming Services and Pet Stores.
  • When advertising through the internet, newspaper or locally PLEASE screen potential owners.  You can advertise through the Petfinder Forum or other Pet-Friendly Forums. Craigslist and Freecycle.com are other options.
  • If you would like to advertise on this site please email me a picture with a brief description and I will post it.
  • DO NOT leave your pet stranded to fend for itself. This is the worst thing to do.  The animal will get hungry, sick and eventually die alone.

How does the Spay/Neuter Program work?

First, you must make an appointment. You can email Melanie at awsurry@gmail.com and let her know you have a pet that needs to be altered.  Please no food or water past midnight before procedure.

We all meet at a location and registration is from 7-8 a.m. Please have you pet in a crate or taxi. If you need to borrow one you must let us know in advance.  No clothes, toys, blankets or food in crates.

Have a label on the crate with your name and your pet's name. Also make sure your pet has their I.D tag and  shot records(not tags, but the actual records) The Spay and Neuter Clinic is located in Kernersville and they come up in a van and the pets are transported to the Clinic. They also give out Rabie Shots for an additional charge.

We meet again the next morning between 8-8:30 a.m and you can take your pets home. You will be given specific instructions about your pets care upon release.

But, I don't want to leave my pet there. Can I be there for him?

You are more than welcome to take your pet to the Clinic yourself. And you can take him (or her) home with you after the procedure.  Ask Melanie about a voucher you can take with you.  Email again is awsurry@gmail.com .

What do I do if I suspect an animal is being abused?

If you suspect an animal is being abused please call Animal Control IMMEDIATELY.  If there are children or elderly parents in that home chances are they are being abused as well. NO ABUSE IS O.K.

Here are some signs that the animal is not being properly cared for.

  •  Do they have fresh water and food that is accessible?
  •  Do they look emancipated? Can you see their ribs?
  •  Are they covered in urine & feces?
  •  Puncture marks that look infected?
  •  No collar, but a chain roped around the neck?
  •   Are they left outside in poor weather conditions?
  •  Do they have adequet shelter while they are outside?

In some cases, kind owners who are limited of what they can do, don't like to ask for help. There pet is their only companion.  Offer to take the dog for a walk, or a bath or pick up an extra bag of cat food and leave it at their backdoor.  A little kindness goes a long way.
